The 1962 Ford Fairlane was a departure from the large full size models of the past and redesigned as an intermediate. The full sized segment was yielded to the Galaxie and the compact was filled by the Falcon. A new small block engine was introduced. This engine was a light-weight 221 cubic-inch V8 that was built using a process called thin-wall casting. This engine was later expanded to 260 cubic inches and finally into the 289 cubic engine all Ford fans know and love. Mid-year Ford introduced the Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe which included bucket seats a mini console and the 260 cubic engine.

1962 Ford Fairlane

I drove the 62 Fairlane for several years. Three on the tree with overdrive. The 221 V8 was adequate but a little under powered. The biggest problem was that it needed overhauling before 90K miles. It just didn't last as long as the 289 or even the 260. Ride was comfortable with the front bench seat. Plenty of trunk room. The rear fins were definitely a plus on style. Great car for cruising main street.
