The El Camino was reintroduced in 1964 after a four absence. This time the car was based on the mid-sized Chevelle instead on the larger Impala. Performance was not Chevy's main priority in 1964 for this car. It was meant to be a utility vehicle and a good one at that.
1964 El Camino
"El Camino is a true multi-purpose vehicle. Good looks plus sedan styling let it be driven anywhere you'd take a regular passenger car. You never feel out of place - even the ladies should be at ease with it. On the other hand this Chevelle is built ruggedly enough to withstand the rigors of pickup-truck work without giving up at the first sign of rough going." Motor Trend September 1964
