“(We have) never tested a standard passenger car with the accelerative performance of the Hemi GTX. This is a winner. The fastest and the most powerful standard car built in America. And the 440 is not far behind.” Car Life Magazine

The GTX along with all the mid-sized Plymouths and Dodges was restyled in 1968. This is the classic design that all muscle car lovers picture when they think of mopar muscle. The lines were smoothed and contoured to provide graceful transition from the front to the rear of the car. The new look was well received and sales were up considerably over the previous year.

The GTX was still the top-of-the-line midsized Plymouth.  As with the previous year, interior upgrades include the 150mph speedometer, bucket seats and an optional console. The exterior was enhanced with special blacked out rear end, dual hood scoops and GTX markings on the side and grill.

The GTX came with a heavy duty suspension and brakes to help keep the car on the road. Engine choices were the same as last years, either the stump pulling 440 or the nasty 426 Hemi. Either engine propelled this car into 1960’s supercar status.

Plymouth sold more GTXs in 1968 than any other year. Almost 18,000 muscle car lovers took possession of a GTX this year.
Plymouth introduced the famous Road Runner this year. In many ways it was the no bars held GTX. It offered much of the performance of the GTX but cost about twenty percent less. Obviously it didn’t have all the comforts of the GTX but it did have similar performance when equipped with similar power plants.
The Street Hemi was a $605 option. Considering that the base price of the car was only $3,329 that was a very expensive engine.

New design with classic lines. This was the first year of the handsome new b-body Plymouths and it was a great success. Performance was great as usual and the car just looked good. I want one!
