In 97 the Vette got its much needed body change to the C5.(The C4 lasted 13 years!) Did they really change the body? And a brand new engine.
This was really more of a revamp of the body. Hense why you seem C$ kits to make them look like C5s. They come off strange because the hoods are in any kits. But yes this is new plastic and fiber glass around an old body. Old but one of the best. Really the set up was 13 years old and even to this day is one of the best handling cars. So really they did a great job in 84. So they made the car look more rounded and modern. But everything else has changed in the car.(this is really like the Camaro/Firebird change in 93) The breaks are alittle larger, the wheels though the same size are updated(something that really held down the C4), the interior is updated and the digital gauge cluster is gone, but the engine is where the real news is.
The LS engine is born. This is an aluminum engine top to bottom, and high compression too. Thats how they get these numbers. A higher compression, and a different set up. So now power is up to 345. A strong number. Though if you have an LT1 or TPI don't think your lost... Those engine have better power bands and lower RPM torque. But the LS is still alittle better. I know there are LS fans who will say it will have a tone more power, but that not true. Its how much you mod it. Also if you have a 500hp LS v a 500 LT the LT will make the faster car. So don't beleive these people who swear the LS is a turn around point for chevy. But still a great engine, and the first year I would understand if you said it had enough power stock since the early 70s. This engine for me is the best for long driving. Its not nearly as loud, also the C5 is a comfortable Vette. But trust me a LS Vette and 6sp is good thing.
This is one of the best looking Vettes, and just a all around cool car. If your considering getting one of these, well... DO IT! You wont regret anything about this car.
