1967 Barracuda 1967 Barracuda

1967 Barracuda
“The new Barracuda is unquestionable the best looking car out of Detroit in 1967… It has tautness of line and integrity of design matched by few American cars of any vintage.” Car and Driver December 1966
  • Plymouth first made reference to the famous “‘Cuda” in 1967. It was used to describe the fastback Sport Barracuda.
  • For the first time, the Barracuda could hold a big block mopar engine. The 383ci big block was offered as an option.
  • The Barracuada was completelty redesigned for 1967. The 383ci big block was a new option for the 1967 cuda.

The Barracuda was completely restyled for 1967. The new car was longer, wider and lower and most importantly it was no longer a Valiant knock off.  The new design was very clean and minimalist and the result was a sporty looking car. This was especially true of the “Sport Barracuda,” Plymouths name for the fastback.

The new larger car could now hold a big block engine, but just barely. Power steering and air conditioning was not available with the big block because of space constraints. Engineers at Plymouth had hastily redesigned the engine compartment to handle the larger engine and things didn’t go as smoothly as they had wished. The redesign was very necessary because Ford had redesigned the Mustang so that in could fit a big block between the fenders. The New Camaro and Firebird were designed from the beginning to hold the larger engines.  The Barracuda could have never competed with the other pony cars without this capability.

The performance Barracuda was still the Formula ‘S’ and it was available as a $177 option that included suspension upgrades, wider tires and a 6000rpm tachometer. The Formula ‘S’ could be had with either the Commando 273ci small block with 235 horsepower or the 383ci big block with an advertised 280 horsepower. Plymouth was able to sale a total of 7,193 Formula ‘S’ models with 5,532 fitted with the 273ci Commando and 1,841 with the 383ci big block.

Under-rated Muscle

A good competitor for the Mustang and Camaro. I don't understand why they didn't sell better.

67 Barracuda Fastback

wonderful car...innovative for it's time. great to drive at its limits. Always wanted one of these, ordered on 42 years ago, it got delivered to the wrong place, never got it. Just bought a one-owner one that I'll take to original. What a car !!!!!

Overall it was a good effort.

The second generation Barracuda was a great step forward. The fastback is a very nice looking car. The only area were more improvement was needed was the front end. It just looks a little busy. Performance was up and sales increase over the previous year. This was pretty good considering how crowded the pony car market was becoming. Ford still had the Mustang and GM introduced the Camaro and the Firebird. Overall it was a good effort.
